RELIGION:
A set of four prayers ( three of which were learned in third grade) need to be memorized and individually recited by September 30th. Writing a summary of the Friday Gospel will be a continuing aspect of Religion. Behavior in Mass is regularly observed. Attention to the Gospel and Mass responses (including singing) are encouraged. These will be a subset of the Religion grade. Once a month I will offer extra credit for attending the Parent Club 7 AM Mass on the third Thursday of the month. Five points per Mass will be given. I realize this may be a hardship for some, but it is an easy five points. For the first three quarters the same Mass response quiz will be given. That same assessment will be a test for fourth quarter. Vocabulary words for each chapter will be introduced and discussed throughout the chapter. They will often be included on the tests/quizzes. Religion tests/quizzes are more difficult than the students realize. Studying for them is essential. Once a week we will go to Adoration. My class has a scheduled time of Mondays.
We will also be studying virtues and saints monthly throughout the year. Each month we will focus on a new saint and virtue. Your student will receive an assignment that you will need to sign concerning the saint and virtue for that month. Tests: 50%, Class/homework: 30%, Quizzes:10%, Prayers and Gospel:10%.
MATH:
Mastery of skills will be checked on a continuing basis. I often work with students during recess to help boost skills. Opportunities for mastery of facts will be numerous, but there is nothing like practice outside the classroom. We will have one timed assessment of facts each Friday, starting with addition, followed by subtraction, multiplication and division, in that order. We will start with 5 minutes and work our way down to 2 minutes. The time allowed will reduce by 30 seconds weekly when all the skills have been given. We will also work on counting change, word problems, etc. Quizzes will have review questions as well as vocabulary. Incorrect facts are written 10x each on the bottom or back of the timed assessment.
Tests-50%, Classwork/Homework-30%, Quizzes-10%, Facts-10%
READING:
Vocabulary and Questions ( V & Q ) will be generally due on Thursdays. This includes writing the definition for the word, as well as using the word in an original sentence. I would suggest that the story is read over the weekend, as well as completing the vocab and questions 1-4 . This will dramatically reduce panic on Wed. night. The number 5 question is the one that will be written about on Thursdays, as part of our Reading quiz. Thinking and formulating how to answer this question prior to Thursday would be a good idea. All questions will be answered using complete sentences. Vocabulary and questions should be on the same sheet of paper. Additional paper can be attached as needed.
Three approved book reports are due each quarter, either written or oral, one which must be nonfiction . The Twilight series will not be approved , nor will Hunger Games. Book reports are a subset of the reading grade. Encourage your student to not wait until the last minute to do book reports, especially oral reports. The end of the quarter is very busy. Weekly oral book reports are expected to be 3-5 minutes in length, and limited to six students per week. Students will sign up on Monday for the following Friday, on a first -come, first -serve basis. They may erase their name by Thursday without penalty. Those names still on the board on Friday will be expected to do the oral book report. Oral book reports are required to have the book available for perusal by students. During first quarter only, each student may use a book they read over the summer as a book report. Tests-50%, Classwork/Homework 30% and Quizzes 20%.
